EEBUS describes the communication interface that enables energy management relevant devices in buildings to connect and interact with each other and with grid and market operators. EEBUS empowers the digitalisation of the energy transition by creating a communication standard that ensures interoperability of all energy-relevant devices and systems across domains. The main challenge is to connect independent actors with different interests and interactions at the same grid connection point. Each actor wants to influence the operation of the energy-relevant devices inside the building with different objectives (e.g. cost optimisation vs. grid stabilisation). EEBUS defines how the devices should behave within the energy management and how the signals from the different actors should be coordinated and implemented. EEBUS thus enables easy data exchange with the corresponding control systems on the grid and energy trading side. By using EEBUS, the building owners can benefit from lower energy costs, higher comfort and security, and reduced carbon footprint. The grid and market operators can benefit from more flexibility, reliability and efficiency in managing the energy supply and demand. Learn more in this video EEBUS has developed a comprehensive architecture for influencing the behaviour of a customer installation at the grid connection in a coordinated manner. This approach is, independent of the devices employed and the direction of power flow. White goods, heat pumps, charging stations, electric vehicles, and other power storage devices can all be influenced using this strategy. This architecture serves as an essential base for the digitalisation of the energy transition.” Dr. Gunnar Steg Member of the EEBus board , Volkswagen AG EEbus speak energy! For whom? EEBUS offers solutions for Device Manufacturers (Smart Meter Industry, Energy Management Providers, HVAC, EVSE, White Goods, Solar, Energy Storage Manufacturers) as well as for Grid Operators and Energy Service Providers (e.g. Aggregators, Sales Departments). For Distribution Grid Operator Protection of local resources Optimisation of local grid utilisation Transparency & control at the grid connection point For Device Manufacturer & EMS Provider Compliance with regulatory requirements at GCP Cost/-CO2/-self-consumption optimised operation of devices No direct control of devices, influencing by providing restrictions or incentives Significant reduction of R&D costs Simple and uniform installation by professional tradesmen For Energy Sales & Service Provider Market-organized use of flexibility Optimisation of local grid utilisation Energy sales according to current electricity market prices The uniqueness of EEBUS is that it mostly defines rules, control incentives and limits on how much energy a device may consume or generate at a given time. This enables the energy management system to interfere as little as possible with the direct control of the device. The development, operation and warranty of the Energy Management System and devices thus become much simpler.” Stefan Pachner Member of the EEBus Board , Vaillant Group Why EEBus? To enable interoperability, the definition of data points alone (such as Modbus) is no longer sufficient. A data model is required which is imbedded in standardised applications (Use Cases), which can be applied across manufacturers and devices and evolved over time. EEBUS has developed and standardised such a data model with the corresponding Use Cases. No hardware (e.g. Bluetooth chip) is required for the implementation but software based on IP protocol technologies. Warum standardisiert? Um massenmarkttaugliche Serienprodukte zu ermöglichen Broad support by cross-domain network A strong and powerful communication interface must be backed-up by a broad support base. Within EEBUS we are fulfilling this requirement via an open cross-sector consortium of all relevant stakeholders that constantly develop our standard and its manifestation in international standardisation bodies. Technically standardised We standardise the interests of the members of our cross-industry network. We incorporate the results into the standardisation process (public appeal procedures). We have a process that addresses the alignment of our specifications with the norms. Easy installation: Plug&Play on the premises EEBUS provides an automated plug & play mechanism without the need for specialists’ costly configuration tools to integrate devices into an overall eco-system. This will path the way to a broader acceptance for energy-optimised setups. With our self-discovery mechanism for the exchange of data, devices can communicate their self-description through M2M readable information that even may be changed over runtime. This key element of the EEBUS architecture enables the system to network devices automatically and request the device’s capabilities through EEBUS use case discovery. This unique mechanism leads to self-updating systems with trustable functionality of the connected devices without any ifs or buts. Security compliance for critical infrastructure EEBUS is using widely applied IP communication technologies. Standard based security mechanism such as TLS 1.2, commonly used cipher suites, several elliptic curves together with the certificate update mechanism guarantee maximum security – now and in the future Based on worldwide used IP technology Devices equipped with EEBUS have an integrated EEBUS software driver that communicates with the other devices and systems via TCP/IP in the LAN (e.g. Ethernet, WIFI). No further hardware components are required apart from the standard IP technology.
